Role of Committees Committees are the backbone of the church’s organization. They are how most of the work gets done, and they are a major source of affinity and community among members. Committee chairs and members are normally named for one year terms, however it is not unusual for committe chairs to serve several terms to take advantage of their experience. Ideally, Chairs should identify and groom their replacements. Committees are accountable to the Board of Trustees, which approves the naming of the committee chairs and authorizes their charters each year. Usually, a Board member serves as the liaison between the Board and the committee. Each Spring prior to the annual meeting, committees submit budget requests for the ensuing fiscal year. Task Forces are sometimes formed to address a short term need, or focus on a specific issue, they would generally be short lived, and action oriented. The Minister’s Role on Committees The minister is ex-officio member of all regular committees and the Board of Trustees, except for the Nominating Committee and the Search Committee. The minister : (1) meets with the Committee on Ministry monthly, or as needed, (2) attends all meetings of the Board of Trustees, and (3) provides support and assistance to all established committees on an ‘as needed” basis.
