Who Are We?

Our History
Since its founding as the Second Congregational Church in 1716, the Unitarian Universalist Church of Marblehead (UUCM) has been at the forefront of progressive religion in New England. Quickly adopting Unitarianism in the late eighteenth century and Universalism in the 1960s.

Our congregation has played a large role in the lives of many notable individuals. Our first minister was Rev. Edward Holyoke, who went on to become President of Harvard College. General John Glover, a confidant of George Washington, was married in our congregation.

We have a long history in Marblehead and look forward to making new connections and memories with our community.
Our Mission
The Unitarian Universalist Church of Marblehead is a liberal religious community that celebrates spiritual and intellectual inquiry and growth. We are inspired to practice and promote our Unitarian Universalist values and principles with acceptance, compassion, and love, both within our church and in the larger world community.

Governance
Consistent with our shared values, our congregation is organized democratically. The congregation, by majority vote, has final authority for running UUCM, including policies for operation, the raising and allocation of funds and the selection of ministers.

Our annually elected leaders and staff oversee the operations of our church and reporting to the whole congregation.

We are also an independent member of the Unitarian Universalist Association, a pool of UU resources that its members use to support one another and advocate for justice in our communities and the world.
